Hindi, Urdu, Hindustani, khaRî bolî - English
URL: http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/yahyam/page26/hindustani.htm

The vernacular language native to the Delhi-Agra area of northern India that developed in the Middle Ages is basically known as khaRî bolî ('upright speech' — hence 'standard speech'). Urdu and Hindi are indeed the same language: khaRî bolî. Literary Urdu is not "Persian with Hindi grammar"; it is khaRî bolî with a lot of Persian loanwards (but by no means exclusively Persian vocabulary). Literary Hindi is khaRî bolî with a lot of Sanskrit loanwords. It is not entirely unintelligible to Urdu speakers; no more so than scholarly English with lots of Latin & Greek vocabulary is to the average speaker of English.
