Древнейший из известных семитических языков. Распадался на 2 диалекта - вавилонский и ассирийский, почему его нередко называют вавилоно-ассирийским (или ассиро-вавилонским) языком. Характерная особенность А. я. (как и др. семитических языков) в том, что корень слова состоит только из согласных (преимущественно из трёх), гласные же и дополнительные некорневые согласные выражают грамматические отношения и конкретизируют общее значение корня.
