Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River with 58,910 square miles spanning five major physiographic provinces (Appalachian Plateau, Ridge and Valley, Blue Ridge, Piedmont and Coastal Plain) and two climatological zones (subtropical and temperate). These large-scale biological and physical patterns support a tremendous amount of arthropod diversity. By encompassing the southern limit of two provinces (Blue Ridge and Piedmont), the Georgian arthropod fauna has significance for biogeographical studies of North America.

Louisiana State Arthropod Museum - English

The Louisiana State Arthropod Museum (LSAM), a component collection of the Louisiana Museum of Natural History, contains approximately 400,000 specimens of insects and related arthropods. This includes 280,000 pinned, 18,000 fluid-preserved, and 30,000 slide-mounted specimens. Uncurated specimens in various stages of processing vary through time from 50,000 to 100,000. The LSAM is the principal repository for insects and related arthropods in Louisiana. Significant strengths of the collection include Coleoptera (51%) and Hemiptera (28%). Lepidoptera (6%), Diptera (6%) and Hymenoptera (4%), and other orders (5%) make up the balance of the collection. The collection contains 747 paratypes, 1 syntype, 1 allotype, and 1 holotype.

Introduction to the Cheliceramorpha - English

The Cheliceramorpha includes spiders and scorpions, mites and ticks, horseshoe crabs, daddy-longlegs, and extinct "sea-scorpions", to name a few. It is the second most prominent order of terrestrial arthropods, after the uniramians. Most of its marine representatives are extinct, but were prominent in the Paleozoic and included some fearsome predators.

The largest major group of arthropods is a clade that includes insects, millipedes, centipedes, and their relatives. This group, the Uniramia, was formerly defined to include the Onychophora, which are now considered a separate clade.
