Высказывается предположение, что запускающим механизмом является процесс лавинообразной конденсации переохлаждённого водяного пара, вызывающий резкое понижение давления, шквалистые ветры и вихри. Устойчивость торнадо объясняется тем, что раскручивание вихря происходит за счёт ускорения воздушных потоков в месте образования турбулентных «выступов», как над крылом самолёта.
