The practice of self-immolation among Hindu widows on the funeral pyre of their husbands. One of the reasons it was encouraged was that when a widow committed suttee, all of her inheritance went to the priesthood. Wealthy Christian widows were required to do something similar in the Middle Ages, and, arguably, the practice persists today with wealthy women "donating" to various Christian organizations.

Spinoza's ethical system was a carefully contructed proof which discarded pleasure, wealth, etc in favor of the constant improvement of one's moral character as the highest and most satisfying aim of life.
