1488-1523, German poet and humanist, born near Fulda. After studying at a number of German and Italian universities, he served briefly in the army of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, who proclaimed him poet laureate in 1517. Hutten became an outstanding advocate of German patriotism and of imperial sovereignty over both the papacy and the nobility, and he was an ardent supporter of the German religious reformer Martin Luther, whose doctrines he defended in a series of works.

In 1517 he was crowned poet laureate by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. He wrote innumerable epigrams, speeches, and songs, although his main literary vehicle was dialogues; Arminius, the best known, is in the collection Gesprachsbüchlein (1521).

"Ohne Huttens propagandistische Einstimmung der öffentlichen Meinung hätten Luthers Ideen wohl ein geringeres Echo erfahren, und in den für die Reformation so entscheidenden Monaten des Jahres 1521 stand neben Luther vor allem Hutten im Zentrum des allgemeinen Bewußtseins, der seinem Namen den Zusatz "ex buchonia" anfügte, aus dem Buchenlande also, wie die Rhön damals noch hieß."
