Biographie. Œuvres principales. Charles de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, est né le 18 janvier 1689, près de Bordeaux, à La Brède. De 1700 à 1705, il étudie au collège de Juilly, près de Paris, chez des Oratoriens. Au sortir du collège, il se consacre au droit. En 1708, il devient avocat au Parlement de Bordeaux, puis conseiller en 1714 et, en 1715, épouse Jeanne de Lartigue, protestante. Il publie, en 1720 , les Lettres persanes. Immense succès! Montesquieu séjourne en Angleterre de 1729 à 1731, la société anglaise va le choyer et il est présenté à la Cour.

1689–1755, French jurist and political philosopher. He was councillor (1714) of the parlement of Bordeaux and its president (1716–28) after the death of an uncle, whom he succeeded in both title and office. He gained a seat in the French Academy in 1728. His Persian Letters (1721) brought him immediate fame.
