d. A.D. 444, patriarch of Alexandria (412–44), doctor of the church, known for his animosity toward heretics and heathens. He drove the Jews from Alexandria, and under his rule Hypatia was killed. The great episode in his career was his struggle against Nestorianism, which culminated in the Council of Ephesus in 431.

Cyril began his career as Bishop of Alexandria by showing himself to be an ill-tempered, quarrelsome, hasty, and violent man. He shut the churches of the Novatianists, he drove out the Jews, he quarrelled with the imperial prefect Orestes, and with Orestes' friend Hypatia, a distinguished neo-Platonist scholar. (Hypatia was murdered by a mob.

The Pillar of the Faith (A.D. 444). In the year 412, after the departure of Abba Theophilus, his nephew, Abba Cyril the First, the 24th Pope of the See of Saint Mark, succeeded him. He received various descriptive titles of honor such as ``the Daring Lion,'' ``the Burnished Lamp,'' ``the Second Athanasius,'' and more specifically ``the Pillar of the Faith.''
