St. Joseph of Arimathea - English URL: http://www.pitt.edu/~eflst4/arimathea.htm
I was born about 2000 years ago in Israel, and trained to be a priest in the Pharisaic tradition. It was a hard time, with the Roman occupation, and even among our own people there was much sinfulness. At times it seemed there was nothing we, as priests, could do about it, but we could at least take solace in the fact that we were fulfilling the precepts of the Law.

The Gospels tell us (M 27:57-61; P 15:42-47; L 23:50-56; J 19:38-42) that after the death of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathaea, wealthy, a member of the Council, asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, and buried it with honor in the tomb he had intended for himself. This is our only information about him from writers of his own century.

Joseph of Arimathea was a wealthy disciple of Jesus, who, according to the book of Matthew 27:57-60, asked Pontius Pilate for permission to take Jesus' dead body in order to prepare it for burial. He also provided the tomb where the crucified Lord was laid until his Resurrection.
