Sir Martin Frobisher (1535?-1594) was an English privateer (a pirate licensed by the British government), navigator, explorer, and naval officer. What sort of man was the leader of the expeditions into Arctic waters? A portrait of Martin Frobisher, commissioned in 1577 following the apparent success of his first Arctic voyage, shows a tall, well-built, commanding figure - adventurer and warrior - a little impatient with posing.
