During the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain had occupied, and finally annexed, the island of Malta in the Mediterranean. Malta carried on an important trade with Tripoli, on the north coast of Africa. Tripoli was the capital of one of the six Barbary States, of which the others were the Empire of Morocco, the Deylik of Oran, the Deylik of Algiers, the Beylik of Constantine and the Beylik of Tunis.

British explorer, b. Annan, Scotland. After serving with the British navy in East India and Canada he made two journeys to W Africa. On the initial journey (1822–25) he was one of the first Europeans to reach Lake Chad (Feb. 4, 1823). He traveled through the Hausa states and collected much information about Kano and Sokoto.

Вместе с английскими путешественниками У. Аудни и Д. Денемом в 1822—23 пересек Сахару от Триполи до озера Чад (вдоль 15° в. д.) и достиг г. Сокото. В результате этого путешествия было установлено, что р. Нигер не связана с озером Чад. На обратном пути (1824) вторично пересек Сахару. В 1825 дошёл до Сокото со стороны Гвинейского залива, от г. Лагос.
