British explorer, b. Australia. He made a number of trips to Antarctica and to the arctic regions. Valuable experience gained when he accompanied Vilhjalmur Stefansson's expedition (1913–18) to the arctic regions and Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition (1921–22) to Antarctica prepared Wilkins to assume the leadership in the following years of a number of polar expeditions.

Before his daring polar expedition in the Nautilus, Sir Hubert Wilkins had gained fame as an adventurer and explorer. Born on October 31, 1888, he lived on his family's sheep station until 1903 when left to attend the Adelaide School of Mines, where he studied general engineering, adding photography and cinematography on the side.

In 1931, Sir Hubert Wilkins unsuccessfully attempted to reach the North Pole in a retired United States Navy submarine, the O-12, renamed Nautilus by Wilkins. More information about the voyage can be seen here. The photo below shows 11 of the 25 crew members upon their return to the United States on October 5, 1931. Sir George Hubert Wilkins achieved distinction for his work in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions. Among his most notable achievements are the following: a pioneer in aeronautical photography and motion picture coverage of war; the navigator of his Lockheed Vega on its historic flight over the Arctic Circle in April 1928; the navigator of his Lockheed Vega on its historic flight over Antarctica in December 1928; passenger aboard the Graf Zeppelin on its around the world flight in 1929; the commander of the submarine Nautilus on its trip to the Arctic Circle in 1931; second-in-command of four Lincoln Ellsworth Antarctic Expeditions in the 1930s.
