1905–83, English writer, b. Budapest of Hungarian parents. Koestler spent his early years in Vienna and Palestine. An influential Communist journalist in Berlin in the early 1930s, Koestler was subsequently captured by Franco’s forces during the Spanish Civil War; Spanish Testament (1937) relates his experiences. Released in 1937, he edited an anti-Nazi and anti-Soviet French weekly and served in the French Foreign Legion (1939–40).

Hungarian born British novelist, journalist, and critic, best known for his novel DARKNESS AT NOON (1940), which reflects his break with the Communist Party, and his ideological rebirth. From 1937 Koestler was one of the main representatives of politically active European authors, whose attacks on the Soviet totalitarianism during the early period of the Cold War separated him from such internationally famous intellectuals as Sartre and Brecht. Since 1956 he focused on mainly in questions of science and mysticism, especially telepathy and extrasensory perception.

(1905-1983) - журналист, писатель, автор десятка остросюжетных, политических и автобиографических романов, эссе. Родился в Будапеште. Учился точным наукам и психологии в Вене, в двадцать лет стал собственным корреспондентом нескольких европейских газет, писал репортажи из Парижа, Берлина, России, Испании, с Ближнего Востока. Во время гражданской войны в Испании был взят в плен нацистами, провел несколько месяцев в тюрьме и был освобожден в обмен на военнопленных, после того как за него вступилась мировая общественность.
