Balloon Kissing Gourami, Helostoma temmincki - English

These are a fairly new fish to the aquarium hobby. They are probably a hybrid of the Pink Kissing Gourami that is rounder and not quite as laterally compressed. These fish also use their lips to rasp algae from the surface of rocks or glass in the aquarium.

The anabantoid family Helostomatidae contains a single species, Helostoma temminckii, a highly specialized filter feeder endemic to Southeast Asia. As part of its feeding apparatus, the fish has unusually fine gill rakers and highly modified soft structures on its gill arches. The fish also is armed with horny teeth on the lips for scraping algae off surfaces.
