Lichonycteris obscura is a little known species that is rare in nature, poorly represented in collections, and potentially threatened (Taddei & Pedro 1993, Wilson 1996). In fact, this species has recently been included in the official faunal list of Brazilian species threatened with extinction. Its distribution includes Central America, from Mexico (Chiapas) to South America, that is Peru, Bolivia and the Amazon Basin.

This bat is assumed to pollinate some of the night-blooming plants. Gardner, LaVal, and Wilson (1970) reported that a lactating female L. obscura was collected simultaneously with a flying juvenile male on 9 January in Costa Rica. Another female contained a 14-mm embryo on 27 March. Two pregnant females were taken in Guatemala in February (Wilson 1979).
