In Venezuela this bat occurs in forested lowlands, usually near streams or in other moist places (Handley 1976). Reported roosting sites include: caves in the Yucatan (Jones, Smith, and Genoways 1973), a Mayan ruin in Guatemala (Rick 1968), and a hollow tree in Costa Rica (Starrett and Casebeer 1968). The diet includes insects, fruit, and apparently a substantial proportion of small vertebrates such as other bats, opossums (Marmosa), mice, birds, lizards, and frogs.

In Venezuela, C. auritus occurs in forested lowlands near streams or other moist places. In Mexico, this species is found in cloud forest. Roosting occurs in caves, ruins, and hollow trees at elevations between 0-2000 m.
