The single species, P. stenops, occurs from southern Mexico to Bolivia and southeastern Brazil (Barquez and Ojeda 1979; Hall 1981; Jones and Carter 1976, 1979; Trajano 1982). Based on an analysis of genetic data from protein variation, Baker, Dunn, and Nelson (1988) proposed that this species be transferred to the genus Phyllostomus.
