Specimens have been collected along stream beds and other moist areas, but can also be found in dryer areas. Animals were found equally in open and forested habitat.

P. hastatus is one of the larger American bats, with a head and body length of about 100-130 mm, forearm length of about 83-95 mm, wingspread of about 457 mm, and adult weight of about 50-100 grams. In the smallest species, P. discolor, head and body length is about 75 mm, forearm length is 55-65 mm, and weight is about 20-40 grams. The length of the tail in Phyllostomus ranges from 10 to about 25 mm. The coloration is dark brown or blackish brown, grayish, reddish brown, or chestnut brown above and somewhat paler below.
