These bats are usually found in treeless and arid regions. Rhinopoma hardwickei have special adaptations for their desert lifestyle. These include valves in the nostrils that can be shut to keep dust out and kidneys modified to reduce water loss. They will roost in caves, rock clefts, wells, pyramids, palaces, and houses. They often hange by the thumbs as well as the feet.

The bats of this genus are the only ones in the suborder Microchiroptera with a tail nearly as long as the head and body combined. The tail membrane is extremely short and narrow. The large ears, connected by a band of skin across the forehead, extend beyond the nostrils when the ears are laid forward.
