Ambystomatidae (Mole Salamanders) - English

The mole salamanders (Family Ambystomatidae) are found only in North America. Like other members of the Order Caudata, they have slender bodies, long tails and distinct body regions with arms and legs of about the same size. They superficially resemble the lizards but lack the scaly skin, claws and external ear openings of these reptiles.

Ambystoma maculatum (Spotted Salamander): Narrative - English

Spotted salamanders are rarely seen due to their habit of staying underground. These salamanders are 'mole salamanders' and require areas with suitable soil for burrowing. Adult spotted salamanders are most abundant in areas of deciduous and mixed forests. The habitat provides the salamanders with existing burrows and coverage under logs and rocks.
