Yesenin left home at 17, and gained literary success with his first volume Radunitsa (1916, Mourning for the Dead). Yesenin welcomed the Revolution as the social and spiritual transformation that would lead to the peasant millennium he envisioned in his next book, Inoniya (1918; "Otherland").

Yesenin also spelled Esenin the self-styled “last poet of wooden Russia,” whose dual image—that of a devout and simple peasant singer and that of a rowdy and blasphemous exhibitionist—reflects his tragic maladjustment to the changing world of the revolutionary era.

The "prodigal son" of Russian poetry, whose self-destructive life style and peasant origins marked his work throughout his relatively short career. Esenin died at the age of 30, tired of life and poetry. His suicide in Leningrad prompted a wave of imitative suicides. Esenin became a myth and legend, and he is still one of the most beloved poets in his country.

Soviet poet, born in Konstantinovo (renamed Esenino in his honour). He went to Petrograd in 1915, attached himself to the Symbolists, welcomed the Russian Revolution, revived peasant traditions and folklore, and initiated the Imaginist group of poets in 1919.
