Cutthroat eels (Synaphobranchidae) - English
URL: http://www.arctic.uoguelph.ca/cpl/organisms/fish/marine/cut_eels/cut_intro.htm

This is a small family of eels, with 26 species, two of which are found off the coasts of Canada. These fishes live on the bottom of oceans, at depths from 100 to 4800 m. Their family name is derived from the position of the gill slits, under the head, and below the eyes. The morphology of adults in this group varies, with the number of gills, the size and shape of teeth, and the shape of the snout differing between species. Shared characteristics include dorsal and anal fins that are continuous with the caudal fin, and dark colouration, usually brown, grey, or black.
