Il exerce а Paris, retourne en Suиde comme mйdecin des souverains, se dйpense sans compter au cours de l'йpidйmie de cholйra а Naples (qu'il dйcrira dans Lettres d'une ville en deuil, 1899), puis lors du tremblement de terre de Messine (1908) et pendant la guerre de 19I4-1918.

Swedish physician, psychiatrist, and writer whose best-known work is the autobiography THE STORY OF SAN MICHELE (1929, Boken om San Michele). It is an account of Munthe's experience as a doctor in Paris and Rome, and in semi-retirement at the villa of San Michele on the island of Capri (Italy). Both realistic and mystical, the book achieved an immense popularity and has been translated into a number of languages.

Судьба «Легенды о Сан-Микеле» так же необычна, как и судьба ее автора, известного шведского врача Акселя Мунте. Книга увидела свет в 1929 году, когда ее автору было семьдесят два года. Он написал ее по-английски, а затем сам же перевел на родной язык (по его собственным словам, он затратил почти столько же времени на перевод, сколько у него ушло на создание оригинала).
