The tundra is a cold, treeless area; it is the coldest biome. The tundra is characterized by very low temperatures, very little precipitation (rain or snow), a short growing season, few nutrients, and low biological diversity. The word tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, which means "treeless plain."

Alpine Tundra in the Rockies - English

High above the pines, junipers, aspens, furs and spruce trees are the flower-rich meadowlands of the alpine tundra in the Rockies. Alpine Tundra grows only above the timberlines. The word tundra is derived from the Lappish language and means "land of no trees".

Biome: Polar Tundra - English

The polar tundra consists of frozen lands. Little vegetation grows on the thin soils of the tundra. Permafrost, or frozen ground, is common in much of this region. Large portions of tundra can be found across northern Canada and Siberia in Asia. This is the land of the Eskimo and Laplander. It is the summer range for the reindeer, moose, and elk. This land has long winters and summers (midnight sun). Agriculture is impossible except in greenhouses.

Tundra: The Frozen Prairie - English

This biome circles the world in the highest northern latitudes. Here temperatures often reach about -50°F in the winter. Tundra covers about one-fifth of the Earth's land surface. Because of the cold climate it is impossible for trees to grow, for this reason the Tundra biome looks like prairie land, but of course frozen over.
