A family of mammals of the order Carnivora. The 82 species include the genets, civets, linsangs, and mongooses. Viverrids typically have a long body and tail and short legs.

This family of 36 Recent genera and 71 species is found in southwestern Europe, southern Asia, the East Indies, Africa, and Madagascar. Certain genera have been introduced to areas in which the family does not naturally occur.

This family is native to southern Europe, Africa and Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines. Viverrids apparently radiated on Madagascar, where there are a number of endemic genera. The family includes 34 species currently placed in 20 genera.
