Die GWN hat sich gegründet, um der Forschungsmisere auf dem Gebiet der Wildtierforschung entgegenzuwirken. Ziel ist es, die Wildtierforschung in Deutschland zu fördern. Hierfür werden Mittel aus Wirtschaft, Stiftungen und Spenden zweckgebunden für Grundlagenforschung und Artenschutzprojekte vergeben. Besonders unterstützt werden Maßnahmen zu einem besseren Miteinander von Mensch und Wildtier.
