Der französische Philosoph und Soziologe Émile Durkheim war Professor in Bordeaux und Paris. Durkheim betonte, daß die Gesellschaft mehr ist als die Summe der Individuen, die zu ihr gehören. Er stellte fest, daß die Gesellschaft nicht mit biologischen oder psychologischen Begriffe erklärt werden kann.

Sociologist, born in Epinal, France, generally regarded as one of the founders of sociology. He studied at Paris, and became a teacher, then taught at the University of Bordeaux (1887) and at the Sorbonne. His writings include Les Règles de la méthode sociologique (1894, The Rules of Sociological Method) and a definitive study of suicide (1897). He is perhaps best known for his concept of "collective representations', the social power of ideas stemming from their development through the interaction of many minds.

Emile D. Durkheim was born on the evening of April 15, 1858 at Epinal in Lorraine. His mother, Melanie, was a merchant's daughter and his father was the Rabbi of Epinal and was also Chief Rabbi of the Vosges and Haute-Marne. Emile spent part of his early school years in a rabbinical school destined to follow the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great grandfather, who had also been rabbis. However, this desire was short-lived as he cut away from Judaism after he arrived in Paris.

During his lifetime, Emile Durkheim gave many lectures, and published an impressive number of sociological studies on subjects such as religion, suicide, and all aspects of society.
