(1268–1314) – король Франции с 1285 г., из династии Капетингов, внук Людовика IX Святого. Стремился укрепить королев. власть путем ослабления могущества крупных сеньоров и ликвидации власти пап римских над Францией. Юридически укрепил королев. власть на основе рим. права (в противовес праву церковному и обычному). Парижский парламент, Верховный суд и Счетная палата при нем превратились в постоянно действующие учреждения, где служили легисты (знатоки рим. права).

1268–1314, king of France (1285–1314), son and successor of Philip III. The policies of his reign greatly strengthened the French monarchy and increased the royal revenues. Philip asserted his right to tax the clergy for the defense of the realm, thus making permanent a special tax permitted by the popes for support of crusades.

King of France, b. at Fontainebleau, 1268; d. there, 29 Nov., 1314; son of Philip III and Isabel of Aragon; became king, 5 Oct. 1285, on the death of his father, and was consecrated at Reims, 6 Jan., 1286, with his wife Jeanne, daughter of Henry I, King of Navarre, Count of Champagne and Brie; this marriage united these territories to the royal domain.
