The name Leptonychotes refers to the small size of the claws on this seal's hind flippers, . The Greek leptos means "small' or "slender;" onux, "claw"; . is a suffix indicating possession. The name weddellii honors Captain James Weddell, whose book on an antarctic sealing voyage in the 1820s contains a description and an illustration of L. weddellii.

Leptonychotes weddellii live in arctic regions on fast ice areas and in the sea. They don't migrate and local movements are caused by changes in ice conditions. Underwater swimming occurs under natural ice cracks or under ice areas thin enough so that the seals can chew breathing holes using canine teeth (Stirling 1971). Ice areas where the seals dwell are usually flat icy plains.
