Apparently prefers subantarctic (ca 1–8°C) and adjacent temperate (ca 10–20°C) deep oceanic waters. Possible northward movement in summer, approaching continental seas.

Cetacea - the world's whales, dolphins and porpoises all on one site. Shepherd's Beaked Whale is a little-known, and little-seen, species. More than half the sightings and strandings have originated from New Zealand, with the remainder coming from Australia, Argentina, and Chile.

The single species, T. shepherdi, is known by 13 specimens stranded in Australia, New Zealand, Stewart and Chatham islands near New Zealand, the Juan Fernandez Islands off central Chile, the Valdez Peninsula of east-central Argentina, Tierra del Fuego, and Isla Gable east of Tierra del Fuego; and by a probable sighting of a live individual off New Zealand.
