Also known as Maria Aegyptica Memorial 3 April; 1 April in the Greek Church Profile Beautiful, spoiled, cynical, disenchanted, rich child who was the center of her family's pride, and repaid them by running away at age 12. Ran to Alexandria, Egypt where she worked as a dancer, singer, and prostitute for 17 years. Took ship on a pilgrimage to Palestine, hoping to ply her trade among the pilgrims, and then in Jerusalem.

Born probably about 344; died about 421. At the early age of twelve Mary left her home and came to Alexandria, where for upwards of seventeen years she led a life of public prostitution. At the end of that time, on the occasion of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, she embarked for Palestine, not however with the intention of making the pilgrimage, but in the hope that life on board ship would afford her new and abundant opportunities of gratifying an insatiable lust.

When she was a very little girl, Mary of Egypt was a great sinner. Almost everyone heard about her. For she was very beautiful. She led so many people into sin. She was very bad. One day a crowd of people took ship for Jerusalem. The king had just found the Cross on which our Lord was hung. Mary went along because she thought it fun to travel. She did not care about the Cross.
