Leichhardt was born in Prussia (Europe) and arrived in Sydneyin 1841. He had studied philosophy, languages, natural science and medicine and came to Australia to study natural science (geology and wildlife) in a hitherto unexplored environment. His first exploratory trip, which was commenced in 1844, was as leader of an expedition to find a new route from Moreton Bay to the Gulf of Carpentaria (Port Essington). Leichhardt was a poor bushman and two of the party turned back soon after the expedition commenced. Later, another member of the party, Gilbert, was killed by aborigines.
