1825–92, English naturalist and explorer. In 1848 he went with A. R. Wallace to Brazil, where he explored the upper Amazon, returning in 1859 with some 8,000 new zoological species. He was the first to state a plausible theory of mimicry. His great work was The Naturalist on the River Amazon (1863). From 1864, Bates was assistant secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.

Henry Bates was a naturalist and explorer most famous for his expedition to the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace in 1848. Wallace returned in 1852, but lost his collection in a shipwreck. When Bates arrived home seven years later (in 1859) he brought with him over 14,000 specimens (mostly insects) of which 8,000 were new to science.

Henry Bates is famous for his contributions to the taxonomy of Neotropical scarabs, among other things. He and Alfred Russel Wallace left England in 1842 to explore and collect insects in the Amazon basin in what was to become incredibly valuable explorations and insights into natural history and evolution for the both of them.

British naturalist, primarily an entomologist, who also made large general collections of Amazonian animals during 14 years of field work. Bates, already a diehard beetle collector, became friends with Wallace while they were both living in the English countryside and then set out with him to become a professional collector in the Amazon in 1848.

When the young Alfred Russel Wallace dreamed of journeying to the Amazon, he was encouraged by his entomologist friend, Henry Walter Bates. Bates joined Wallace on the expedition in 1848, much to the regret of his parents who felt he'd make a much better living in manufacturing than in collecting exotic specimens.
