URL: http://www.athenapub.com/martyr2.htm

The Spanish navigators Alonzo de Ojeda and Diego Nicuesa set out in 1499 from Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) to explore the northern coast of South America. The following excerpt is from Peter Martyr's account, De Orbe Novo (1511) derived from first hand reports to which Martyr had access, as Royal Chronicler for Spain.

URL: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11230a.htm

shown in filters: Personalia

He came of an impoverished noble family, but had the good fortune to start his career in the household of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia. He early gained the patronage of Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca, Bishop of Burgos and later Patriarch of the Indies, who made it possible for Ojeda to accompany Columbus in his second voyage to the New World. Ojeda distinguished himself there by his daring in battle with the natives, towards whom, however, he was unduly harsh and vindictive.
