Axel Munthe blev kronprinsessan Victorias läkare år 1893, livmedikus år 1903 och förste livmedikus år 1909. Han bosatte sig på Capri? och lät där uppföra villan [San Michele]?. I Leksand lät han i närheten av kyrkan? år 1910 - år 1911 uppföra ett herrgårdsliknade hus som fick namnet Stengården. Huset fick hustrun Hilda som morgongåva och det fick år 1967 namnet Hildasholm?.

Né en Suède en 1857, Axel Munthe fait ses études de médecine en France. Sa réputation de neurologue est telle que son maître Charcot lui envoie des malades même après leur dissension. Il exerce à Paris, retourne en Suède comme médecin des souverains, se dépense sans compter au cours de l'épidémie de choléra à Naples (qu'il décrira dans Lettres d'une ville en deuil, 1899), puis lors du tremblement de terre de Messine (1908) et pendant la guerre de 19I4-1918.

It is an account of Munthe's experience as a doctor in Paris and Rome, and in semi-retirement at the villa of San Michele on the island of Capri (Italy). Both realistic and mystical, the book achieved an immense popularity and has been translated into a number of languages.
