English economist and journalist. He achieved wide popularity as a lecturer and writer. Criticizing classical economics, which centered on man’s mechanical response to inflexible economic laws, he held that economic theory was bound up with the ethical problems of social welfare and should be a guide to reform. The economic measures he supported prefigured the more fully developed ideas of John Maynard Keynes.

Гобсон - известный английский экономист. В теоретическом отношении - эклектик, он в области политики разделял позицию фабианцев и выступал в качестве сторонника социальных реформ. Исследуя капитализм, он много работал над свойственными этому строю социальными язвами и выпустил ряд работ, широко известных у нас в русском переводе ("Эволюция современного капитализма", "Проблемы безработицы" и т.д.).
