Ferdinand Oyono avait beaucoup d'influence dans le gouvernement du Cameroun. Il a servi comme ministre de la culture et aussi comme ministre des affaires étrangères. Une vie de boy, Le vieux nègre et la médaille et Chemin d'Europe représentent les oeuvres les plus importantes du travail littéraire de cet écrivain francophone. Ces romans démontrent les attitudes sur le "système" colonial. Par exemple, dans Le vieux nègre et la médaille, le vieil homme reçoit une médaille, mais il doute des raisons de sa sélection en tant que le gagnant. Donc il commence à voir sa médaille comme un symbole du système.

After studying in Africa and in Paris at the Law School and the National School of Administration, he joined the Cameroonian diplomatic corps, served in various African and European countries, and held a number of posts at the United Nations (1975–83). He was later (1984–85) ambassador to Great Britain and afterward returned home to serve in the government. Oyono has been Cameroon’s minister of culture since 1998.
