Né à Dabhel, Surat, Inde, il est arrivé avec sa famille en Afrique du Sud en 1934. Carrière dans l’enseignement, avec une parenthèse dans le commerce, avant de se consacrer entièrement à l’écriture : nouvelles (The Hajji and Other Stories, 1978 ; Noorjehan and Other Stories, 1990) et romans (The Visitation, 1980 ; The Emperor, 1984).
