The first printed work in Finnish was the ABC book published c.1542 by Bishop Michael Agricola (1508–57). In 1642 the first complete translation of the Bible in Finnish appeared in Stockholm. Until the 19th cent. most of the writing done by Finns was in Swedish, since from the 13th cent. to 1809 Finland was in political vassalage to Sweden.

Finnish playwright and short-story writer who described women's position in the society and advocated contemporary radical social ideas in magazine articles. During the early years of the young Finnish Theatre - the National Theatre was founded in 1872 - Canth's plays were performed on its stage more often than Shakespeare's. She was the first notable Finnish social realist, whose work showed the influence of Henrik Ibsen and Georg Brandes.

Finnish writer and translator, who wrote mainly for children. Swan's fairy tales were influenced by world literature folk tales, and combined realistic elements with fantasy. In her work differences between social classes create conflicts - the main character is often treated wrong, but wins at the end like in 'Cinderella'. One or two generations of Finnish children were educated in the spirit of her teachings. However, in Swan's stories the pedagogical material did not have the same significance as in Topelius's work. Swan's Christian world view reflected more or less subdued from her publications .

Volter Kilpi (1874-1939) - English

surname until 1886 Ericsson. Essayist and novelist, pioneer of Finnish modernist literature. Kilpi's major novel is ALASTALON SALISSA (2 vols, 1933), a long and nostalgic book compared to the works of Proust and Joyce. Kilpi's family name was really Ericsson, but he and his two brothers adopted the Finnish surname.

Finnish writer, former building construction supervisor, whose books were national bestsellers every autumn when they appeared before the Father's Day. Päätalo's major work, the nearly 17 000 pages long autobiographical IIJOKI series, depicts the author's own path from the backwoods of Northeast Finland to the publication of his first book and to literary fame. The last part of the series, PÖLHÖKANTO IIJOEN TÖRMÄSSÄ (1998), finished his 28-year long writing job. Päätalo died two years later.

The national poet of Finland who wrote in Swedish, and also exercised a great influence on Swedish literature. Runeberg's poetry has been compared to that of the great European romantics, such as Hugo, Shelley, Keats, Lermontov and Petöfi. He was the first Finnish writer to achieve a broad national significance and a wide international fame.

Poet, Ph.D. (in geology), pioneer of modernism in literature in Finland. With his use of a seemingly limitless vocabulary and meters that differed from the norm, Hellaakoski showed new directions for poetry. He wrote some twelve collections, but ceased writing poetry from the late 1920s to 1940, concentrating during those years to teaching and researching.

Poet and a brilliant translator, the central figure in Finnish literature in the 1960s and 1970s. Saarikoski emerged into poetry somewhat like a enfant terrible, a combination of John Lennon and Zorba the Greek. He wrote in simple, straight-forward language. He often used images from antiquity and contrasted everyday observations with philosophical insights, following the free flow of thoughts.
