Ethologie

Ethology is the systematic study of animal behavior. It is used to figure out why animals do what they do. In the case of environmental and social stress, it can also be used to figure out what is wrong and give us clues as to what needs to be changed to alleviate the stress.

Melissa Kaplan's Herp Behavior - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/mainbehavior.html

Behavior observation, whether of humans or other animals, can tell us much about the animal being observed--if we know what we are looking at and how to interpret it. By recognizing what are the normal behaviors of a healthy wild and captive animal and being observant of any changes in behavior, we can often head off social, environmental, and health problems before they become advanced enough to require serious--and often expensive--intervention.

Lizard Tough Guys - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/alberts.html

Depending on space requirements and the distribution of key resources in the environment, social behavior among lizards can vary from defense of exclusive territories to the formation of dominance hierarchies. As anyone who has watched large groups of lizards is aware, increases in population density usually lead to more social interaction and heightened aggression, especially among mates.

Handling Reptiles - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/handlingreptiles.html

It may seem that how to hold an animal is self-evident, but it is surprising how many people, children and adults alike, can't seem to figure out what to do with a reptile. People who think nothing of handling various pet mammals and birds without thinking much about how to do it are often at a loss when confronted with something that has no fur or feathers. In fact, holding a reptile isn't much different than holding any other animal. You must support its body weight so that it feels comfortable and secure.

Coprophagy - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/coproph.html

Coprophagy (copro = excrement, dung; phagy = one that eats) in reptiles is not well documented. Neonate prehensile tails skinks (Corusia zebrata), who spend a considerable length of time in association with their mothers after they are born, have been seen to eat the mother's feces (Burghardt et al. 1995). Hatchling green iguanas (Iguana iguana) have also been seen to ingest other iguana feces.

Reptilian ethology in captivity: Observations of some problems and an evaluation of their ætiology - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/warwicketh2a.html

shown in filters: Publikationen

Evaluations were made of >4000 reptiles maintained in captive situations to assess numerous abnormal behaviours and any related environmental and other influences. Certain behavioural restrictions warrant concern because they result in physical injuries while others are primarily related to inhibited ethological expression; this paper concentrates on the latter.

Important ethological and other considerations of the study and maintenance of reptiles in captivity - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/warwicketh1.html

Behavioural and related studies involving reptiles occur commonly in establishments around the world. Despite the convictions of researchers, it is clear from published material and ongoing studies that captivity and general research stresses on animals offer the potential capacity to influence results. Although many biologists are aware of this, it is an aspect which is scarcely promoted and is seldom a conditional requirement in research.

Ethology, Ecology and Critical Anthropomorphism - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/ethology.html

Knowing how to care for an animal in captivity is more than just learning about the basics such as temperature requirements, the right substrate to use, what type of food they eat, and how to offer water. To really care for any animal in captivity, we need to know about how that species lives in the wild, how they make use of their environment, and the signs that indicate when we are doing it wrong.

Emotion and Phylogeny - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/ethology2.html

Gentle handling of mammals (rats, mice) and lizards (Iguana), but not of frogs (Rana) and fish (Carassius), elevated the set-point for body temperature (i.e., produced an emotional fever) achieved only behaviorally in lizards. Heart rate, another detector of emotion in mammals, was also accelerated by gentle handling, from ca. 70 beats/min to ca. 110 beats/min in lizards. This tachycardia faded in about 10 min. The same handling did not significantly modify the frogs' heart rates.

Classical vs. Critical Anthropomorphism - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/anthrop2.html

Classical anthropomorphism is the assumption that all non-human animals have the same feelings, psychosocial needs, reactions to events, etc., that humans do. This not only discounts the fact that every human does not share the exact same feelings and responses, nor have they the same needs, as every other human, but also ignores the fact that non-human animals are very different, including in the biology and anatomy of their brain. While all animals share some things in common, such as the need for an environment that meets their physiological needs.

Cognitive ethology: Slayers, skeptics and proponents - Part I - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/ethology1.html

shown in filters: Publikationen

As a relatively new interdisciplinary science, cognitive ethology, broadly defined as the comparative and evolutionary study of nonhuman animal (hereafter animal) thought processes, consciousness, beliefs, or rationality, is under attack with respect to its scientific status. In this paper we identify three groups of people with different views on cognitive ethology, slayers, skeptics, and proponents. Our analyses are based on some published reviews of Donald Griffin's works in cognitive ethology and other clearly stated opinions concerning animal cognition.
