German novelist and playwright, born in Munich. The first of his highly readable, scholarly historical novels, The Ugly Duchess (1923; trans. 1927), is a portrayal of 14th-century Tyrolean life. It was followed by Jud Süss (1925; trans. 1926), a novel concerned with 18th-century German absolutism; and Josephus (1932; trans. 1932), the first novel of a trilogy based on Jewish history. In his documentary novel Success (1930; trans. 1930), Feuchtwanger interpreted the course of events in Munich from the revolution of 1919 to 1930.

German novelist. A pacifist, socialist, and friend of both Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht, he fled Germany for France in 1933; he was later arrested but dramatically escaped to the United States in 1940. Often concerned with Jewish history, his works are also noted for their lucid analyses of contemporary problems. His many novels include the trilogy Josephus (1923-42) and Success (1929, tr. 1930).

Lion Feuchtwanger and his Josephus Trilogy - English

By Jim Bloom. "The neglected German-Jewish author Lion Feuchtwanger is one of the most stalwart defenders of Josephus’ blighted reputation. Feuchtwanger ’s fiction trilogy, approximately based on Josephus’ discernible life history, is considered by many Josephan scholars to be in the forefront of the modern tendency towards moderation of the latter’s conventional traitor image. In Germany, paperback editions of Feuchtwanger’s novels have been enjoying a renaissance. They have sold close to a million copies from the late 1970s to the present day."

Feuchtwanger élete és munkássága. "A régi korokban játszódó szépirodalom - regény, dráma - nem mindig törekedett történelmi hitelességre. A cselekmények általában régen, az ókorban, középkorban játszódtak anélkül, hogy gondoltak volna a régiségtani hitelességre. Csak a felvilágosodás hitelességigénye, majd a romantika figyelme a valóság túlzásaira, szélsõségességeire tette szükségessé a felidézett kornak a jelentõl különbözõ régiségtani hitelességét."

Veranstaltungsprogramm - Städtische Bühnen: Thomas Brecht von Lion Feuchtwanger - German
URL: http://archiv.informatik.fh-augsburg.de/informatik/projekte/brecht/kalender/prog

shown in filters: Personalia, Publications
