Science in Al-Andalus (Spain)
- English
URL: http://users.erols.com/gmqm/andalus1.html
In the ninth century, the library of the monastery of St. Gall was the largest in Europe and it boasted 36 volumes. At the same time, that of Cordoba contained 500,000. In the 10th century private libraries existed which contained as many as 500,000 books. Only a tiny proportion of existing Arabic scientific texts have been studied, and it will take years to form a more exact idea of the contributions of Muslim scientists to the history of ideas. Brief History of Spain

One of the characteristic features of the early history of Spain is the succesive waves of different peoples who spread all over the Peninsula. The first to appear were the Iberians, a Libyan people, who came from the south. Later came the Celts, a typically Aryan people, and from the merging of the two there arose a new race, the Celtiberians, who, divided into several tribes (Cantabrians, Asturians, Lusitanians) gave their name to their respective homelands.
