Polypterus senegalus is a very active fish so enough swimming space is required. P. senegalus is also a great 'leaper' so the tank must be properly covered. This fish is bottom dweller and provide driftwoods for its shelter. Tall tank is not essential but a good mechanical filtration is required.

Ископаемые предки этого загадочного древнего семейства до сих пор не обнаружены. Многоперы характеризуются удлиненным вальковатым телом, уплощенной головой с двумя короткими осязательными усиками на носу, ромбической ганоидной чешуей (рыбы как бы закованы в броню), 15 -18 спинными колючками, мускулистыми лопастями грудных плавников, а также рядом примитивных черт, общих с двоякодышащими (легочное дыхание, спиральный клапан, артериальный конус и др.).
