This family of 12 Recent genera and 48 species is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Robbins and Sarich (1988), who recognized two subfamilies, Taphozoinae, with Taphozous and Saccolaimus, and Emballonurinae, with the remaining genera. A third subfamily, Diclidurinae, comprising the genera Cyttarops and Diclidurus, sometimes is recognized.
