This family of two Recent genera and species, Eubalaena glacialis and Balaena mysticetus, is found in all oceans and adjoining seas of the world except in tropical and south polar regions (Rice 1984). A third genus, Caperea (see account thereof), often has been placed in the Balaenidae.

Незаметный в море, с маленьким неотчетливым фонтаном. Типично для него не более чем на несколько секунд время от времени появляться на поверхности. Выпрыгивание и поднятие хвоста не наблюдалось. Внешне похож на малого полосатика "выходящего" рылом из воды, но в отличии от полосатика его спинной плавник и спина обычно остается скрытой от глаз.
