Plovers occur throughout the world, from high arctic tundra to tropical sandbars. Normally associated with wetlands, they are still readily distinguished from sandpipers and allies, primarily by a standard "plover-like" bill (except in a few oddities like the Wrybill Anarhynchus frontalis of New Zealand).

Among New Zealand's many bird curiosities, the wry-billed plover is often not included, but it certainly ought to be, for it is the only bird in the world which has its bill bent sideways. The crossbills of the Northern Hemisphere might claim that they share in this distinction, but their bills are symmetrical, the upper mandible being bent one way, and the lower, the other.
