The Quito - Papallacta - Baeza Road connects the capital on the central plateau with the Amazon basin in the east. The road ascends through humid paramo, small stands of Polylepis forest, reaching Papallacta Pass at 4000 meters, and finally descends through montane cloudforest by the time one reaches the town of Baeza in the subtropics.

The Gray-breasted Seedsnipe (Thinocorus orbignyianus) occurs in the Andes of Peru and into Argentina and Chile. The photos presented here are of a one-day old chick (from a clutch of four) near El Yeso Reservoir, Chile.
