Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) was an Antarctic explorer, pioneering aviator, and US Naval Officer. On May 9, 1926, Byrd (the navigator) and Floyd Bennett (the pilot) made what may have been the first airplane trip over the North Pole, in a 15 1/2 hour flight; they flew from King's Bay, Spitsbergen, Norway, to the North Pole and back again. There is a dispute as to whether or not they actually reached the pole.

One of the greatest of all American explorers, he was born at Winchester, Virginia, on October 25, 1888. He earned the Medal of Honor for his exploits in polar exploration. He died in Boston on March 11, 1957. There is a memorial to his memory on Memorial Drive, just outside the gates of Arlington and he is buried in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery. It

This memorial has been placed temporarily near the west side of the National Science Foundation Chalet (249K) during construction of McMurdo's new scinece laboratory. (290K) Formarly the memorial stood just north of the Chalet in International Square, a comorative area displaying flags of the Antarctic Treaty nations that also has been removed to make way for the new laboratory. The memorial is a bronze bust of Richard E. Byrd on a polished black Norwegian marble pedestal. It was donated by the National Geographic Society and erected in October 1965.

It is not possible to know the history of the polar regions or undertake scientific investigation of the areas without being aware of Admiral Richard E. Byrd or benefitting from his contributions. As a navigational aviator, Byrd pioneered in the technology that would be the foundation for modern polar exploration and investigation. As a decorated and much celebrated hero, Byrd drew popular attention to areas of the world that would become focal points of scientific investigation in numerous disciplines. Finally, as a naval officer Admiral Byrd contributed to the role of government in sponsoring and facilitating research in polar regions and topics.
