The Anglo-Boer War (or, then, the Boer War; the South African War; the Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, and so on) was in many respects a new kind of war. Technologically, it saw the first use of some of the generation of weapons that are still with us today - automatic handguns, magazine-fed rifles, and machine guns - and the last use, in an organized military sense anyway, of a relic of 14th century warfare - the cavalry lance.

The Boer War (South Africa, 1899-1902) - English
URL: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/8141/boerwar.html

In October of 1899 the Boers, starting the war with the maxim 'the key to a good defense is a good offense', invade Natal and Cape Province and quickly invest three towns: Ladysmith, Mafeking, and Kimberly. This forces the British to abandon their original offensive plans in order to lift the sieges. The subsequent set-piece battles to free these cities only highlight the problems of the British Army. It is after achieving overwhelming superiority in the field that the British manage to lift the sieges and capture the capital cities of the two Boer republics in May/June, 1900.
