Anguilla, once a lush island with dense rain forest, was discovered some 4,000 years ago by an Arawak-speaking Amerindian people who called it "Malliouhana". The Arawak, skilled farmers and fishermen and good at pottery making, had slowly made their way p the islands from South America by raft or dug out canoe.

The name 'Anguilla', meaning 'eel', was given to the island by the Spanish because of the island's eel-like shape. It was the British, however, who first settled on Anguilla in the 17th century and the island was administered in conjunction with the Leeward Islands.

By the fourth century AD, Amerindians of the Saladoid culture settled in Anguilla. The Saladoids were adept farmers, pottery makers, weavers and basket makers. Many of their creations incorporated their religious beliefs.

When in the spring of 1967 the tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla rebelled against independence and in favor of colonialism, the action was so misunderstood by the islander's ex-mother country, Great Britain, that two years later the English invaded the peace with 315 paratroopers in a witless attempt to put the rebellion down.

The English colonised the island in about 1650 but were themselves wiped out by the Caribs, a warrior people from South America, in 1656. The power struggle between the English and the French in the Caribbean dominated Anguilla's history for the next 150 years and severely disrupted their basic cash crop economy.

After the English and their slaves had settled on the island they found the weather conditions unfavourable for agricultural cultivation and soon left the island and the slaves behind. Anguilla then became apart of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla . Anguillians proved to be very proud people not wanting to succumb to the neglect they had experienced while under St. Kitts' "rule".
